P32 Parking Brake Cable and Shoe Adjustment Procedure
Updated
Chock wheels, key on, engine not running, out of park, and yellow parking brake button pressed in. The key will need to remain on until step 1 is complete, and can be turned off until step 10.
Remove the cable from the threaded shaft on the front of the actuator, using two 3/4" end wrenches to hold the barrel nut (long hex shaft) and loosen the jamb nut. Once the jamb nut is loose, unscrew the barrel nut (long hex shaft) until it falls off the end of the threaded rod on the actuator.
Loosen the bolts and nuts holding the first carrier bearing.
Remove the saddle clamps that hold the front u-joint to the yoke.
Remove the drive line and u-joint from the yoke being careful not to drop the bearing caps off the u-joint. (it is recommended to put tape around the u-joint bearing caps to hold them in place during this procedure)
Secure the driveline assembly out of the way using bungie cords or zip ties.
Remove the drum by removing the bolt out of the center of the yoke, and pull straight back to slide off the transmission output shaft.
Verify the brake shoes have 1/4" of material all the way around each shoe. If they do not have 1/4" shoe material remaining, then replace both shoes. Part# W8831030
Move the top brake cable lever in the brake assembly (the arm the cable is attached to inside the drum) all the way over to the passenger side.
While watching the lever arm, screw the cable back onto the threaded rod of the actuator until the cable end touches the arm and no further. You want the brake lever arm as far over to the passenger side as possible with the crimped cable end just touching the arm.
Tighten down the jam nut to the barrel nut (long hex shaft).
Adjust the shoes as needed using the star wheel at the top center of the parking brake assembly until you can slide the drum back onto the transmission output shaft, and reinstall the bolt in the center of the yoke.
Adjust the parking brake shoes: To adjust the shoes, tighten the shoes using the star wheel until you can no longer rotate the drum. (this centers the brake shoes in the drum) Back off the adjustment until you can rotate the drum and just barely hear the shoes grazing the drum as it freely spins.
Reinstall the driveline and tighten the carrier bearing.
